1) Ciao Chiara! Grazie per l'intervista con Indie Witches. Come hai iniziato la tua musica? (Hello Chiara! Thanks for the interview with Indie Witches. How did you start your music?)
Amo da sempre leggere e scrivere poesie, cercare attraverso la parola scritta di assaporare il mondo. Ancor di più la musica e il canto. E quando questi si fondono vi è per me qualcosa di magico, realmente capace di afferrare la realtà esterna e farne un tutt’uno con ciò che invece sta dentro di noi. Ho iniziato con la chitarra, poi col canto, inizialmente inseguendo il mito della “rock band” e trovando invece poi la mia strada come cantautrice solista. Senza però rinunciare al supporto e la condivisione della mia musica con eccellenti musicisti, come la violista Giulia Nuti, il chitarrista Alessandro Alajmo e il bassista Guido Melis, anche produttore del mio primo album “Biancoinascoltato”, uscito circa un anno fa (il 15 dicembre del 2017) per la SuburbanSky Records. Questa prima uscita è insieme inizio e fine di un percorso che credo e spero non finirà mai.
(I have always loved reading and writing poetry, looking through the written word to savor the world. Even more music and singing. And when they merge, there is something magical for me, really capable of grasping external reality and making it one with what is inside of us. I started with the guitar, then with the singing, initially chasing the myth of the "rock band" and then finding my way as a singer songwriter instead. Without renouncing the support and sharing of my music with excellent musicians, such as violist Giulia Nuti, guitarist Alessandro Alajmo and bassist Guido Melis, also producer of my first album "Biancoinascoltato", released about a year ago (December 15th) of 2017) for SuburbanSky Records. This first exit is both the beginning and the end of a journey that I believe and hope will never end.)
2) Qual è stata l'ispirazione per il tuo ultimo video musicale? (What was the inspiration for your latest music video?)
Il videoclip del mio primo singolo “Praga” è stato ideato e realizzato assieme al regista fiorentino, Gianmarco D’Agostino. Abbiamo condiviso l’idea di non voler riproporre pedissequamente la storia raccontata nel testo della canzone, in effetti una poesia che ritrae le atmosfere della suggestiva città ceca. Perciò la scelta del set: Podere Felceto in Chianti, verde e solare, in contrapposizione ai colori cupi e le atmosfere gotiche della città. Abbiamo però voluto richiamare nel video tre elementi centrali nel testo, personificandoli nei tre allegorici personaggi: la bellezza, la femminilità e l’ingenuità, rappresentate dalla bella dama e dal suo specchio (interpretata da Maria Bazzicalupo, cantautrice a sua volta); la vecchiaia, il tempo, la morte, simboleggiate dal vecchio signore con il suo orologio (Alessandro Anichini che ha curato anche il montaggio del videoclip); infine l’artista, il mimo, con il bastone “alla Chaplin” (Marco Monelli, anche pianista e illustratore del booklet del disco). C’è anche un po’ di “Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie”, nel banchetto nel verde stile “cappellaio matto” e un po’ della danza macabra del “settimo sigillo” di Bergman, nel corteo danzante nel quale conduco i miei convitati verso un finale a sorpresa.
(The videoclip of my first single "Praga" was conceived and realized together with the Florentine director, Gianmarco D'Agostino. We shared the idea of not wanting to reproduce slavishly the story told in the text of the song, in fact a poem that portrays the atmosphere of the charming Czech city. So the choice of the set: Podere Felceto in Chianti, green and sunny, in contrast to the dark colors and the gothic atmosphere of the city. However, we wanted to recall in the video three central elements in the text, personifying them in the three allegorical characters: beauty, femininity and ingenuity, represented by the beautiful lady and her mirror (interpreted by Maria Bazzicalupo, songwriter in turn); old age, time, death, symbolized by the old man with his watch (Alessandro Anichini who also edited the video clip); finally, the artist, the mime, with the "alla Chaplin" stick (Marco Monelli, also a pianist and illustrator of the album booklet). There is also a bit of "Alice in Wonderland", in the banquet in the green style "mad hatter" and a bit of the macabre dance of the "seventh seal" of Bergman, in the dancing procession in which I lead my guests to a surprise ending.)
3) Com'è la scena musicale in Italia? (How is the music scene in Italy?)
La scena musicale in Italia non è semplice. La televisione la fa sempre più da padrona, almeno alle “alte sfere”, condizionando ed omologando gli interessi del vasto pubblico. Ci sono però tanti, tantissimi percorsi alternativi, più seguiti di quanto non ci si aspetti, che permettono alla fine di affermarsi all’interno di nicchie più o meno ampie di ascoltatori ancora interessati all’arte vera. Bisogna avere pazienza e tanta determinazione.
(The music scene in Italy is not simple. Television makes it more and more the boss, at least to the "upper echelons", conditioning and homogenizing the interests of the vast public. But there are many, many alternative routes, more followed than you expect, which ultimately allow you to establish yourself within more or less large niches of listeners still interested in real art. We must have patience and a lot of determination.)
4) Quale donna nella tua vita ti ha ispirato di più? (Which woman in your life has inspired you the most?)
Rimanendo nella dimensione musica, Cristina Donà, una delle prime vere cantautrici italiane, è senza dubbio un grande modello per me. Apprezzo soprattutto il legame forte che riesce a creare tra il testo e la musica, senza privilegiare le parole rispetto agli arrangiamenti o viceversa. Credo e spero di fare lo stesso con le mie canzoni: la musica, gli arrangiamenti, la ricerca del suono giusto, devono trasportare altrove, lì dove il testo ti vuole portare, ma da solo non può. Il linguaggio verbale è troppo razionale, per la magia serve la musica.
(Remaining in the music dimension, Cristina Donà, one of the first true Italian singer-songwriters, is undoubtedly a great model for me. I especially appreciate the strong bond that manages to create between the text and the music, without privileging the words with respect to the arrangements or vice versa. I believe and I hope to do the same with my songs: the music, the arrangements, the search for the right sound, must carry elsewhere, where the text wants to bring you, but alone can not. Verbal language is too rational, for music, music is needed.)
5) Chi stai ascoltando attualmente? (Who are you currently listening to?)
Sono in continua ricerca di novità. Soprattutto seguo la scena indipendente del cantautorato al femminile. Ho da poco scoperto Orelle, con il suo disco “Argo”, che con la sua raffinatezza vocale e i suoi richiami alla cultura classica, sento molto vicina ad alcune delle mie cose. Ma anche Katres e il suo “Araba fenice”, Carlot-ta, Giorgia Del Mese, Liana Marino, Verdiana Raw… Senza mai smettere di ascoltare anche i grandi del passato e del presente, spaziando dal cantautorato al rock, da De André, per me insuperabile nei testi, ai Radiohead, magistrali negli arrangiamenti.
(I'm constantly looking for news. Above all, I follow the independent scene of the female singer-songwriter. I recently discovered Orelle, with her album "Argo", which with its vocal refinement and its references to classical culture, I feel very close to some of my things. But also Katres and his "Phoenix phoenix", Carlot-ta, Giorgia Del Mese, Liana Marino, Verdiana Raw ... Without ever ceasing to listen to the great of the past and the present, ranging from singer-songwriter to rock, from De André, unsurpassable in the lyrics, to Radiohead, masterful arrangements.)
6) Qual'è il tuo film preferito? (What is your favorite movie?)
Domanda non facile. Sono appassionata di cinema e rispondere con un unico titolo è davvero difficile. Non voglio però eludere la domanda con una lunga lista di titoli e rispondo con “Luci della ribalta”, di e con Charlie Chaplin, la storia di un vecchio comico in declino e di una giovane ballerina sulla cresta dell’onda. Malinconia e poesia sono i protagonisti incontrastati, ma ciò che più amo della pellicola è l’inno alla vita che il comico Calvero regala alla ballerina Terry, dopo il di lei tentativo di suicidio: “La vita è meravigliosa, se non se ne ha paura” e ancora “c’è una cosa altrettanto inevitabile quanto la morte, ed è la vita. Viva! Viva! Viva!”. Quest’esortazione è servita anche a me, a trovare il coraggio di non abbandonare la mia strada, quella strada che per adesso mi ha portato dove sono, con il mio video, il mio disco, a vivere della mia passione.
(Not easy question. I am passionate about cinema and responding with a single title is really difficult. But I do not want to evade the question with a long list of titles and answer with "Flips of Lights", by and with Charlie Chaplin, the story of an old comedian in decline and a young dancer on the crest of the wave. Melancholy and poetry are the undisputed protagonists, but what I love most about the film is the hymn to life that the comedian Calvero gives to the dancer Terry, after her attempted suicide: "Life is wonderful, if you are not afraid of it "And yet" there is something as inevitable as death, and it is life. Viva! Viva! Viva!". This exhortation has also served to me, to find the courage not to abandon my path, the road that for now has brought me where I am, with my video, my record, to live out my passion.)
7) Dov'è il posto migliore dove i fan ti seguono? (Where is the best place where fans follow you?)
A Firenze, la mia città, senza dubbio all’interno delle stagioni di musica dal vivo dell’associazione La Chute, organizzate al Circolo ARCI il Progresso nei mesi invernali e all’aperto, nel complesso dell’ex-ospedale psichiatrico di San Salvi, durante l’estate. L’associazione sostiene la musica d’autore in tutte le sue forme e organizza anche una rassegna dedicata al cantautorato al femminile, “Cantami o diva”, alla quale ho più volte preso parte. E’ per me un onore e un piacere fare parte di questa fervente realtà che ho la fortuna di avere nella mia città.
(In Florence, my city, no doubt within the seasons of live music of the La Chute association, organized in the ARCI Club the Progress in the winter months and outdoors, in the complex of the former psychiatric hospital of San Salvi, during the summer. The association supports music in all its forms and also organizes an exhibition dedicated to the female singer-songwriter, "Cantami o diva", to which I have repeatedly taken part. It is an honor and a pleasure for me to be part of this fervent reality that I am lucky to have in my city.)
